Bucks For Books

Our Second Grade class has begun a new incentive program to encourage your child to continue participating in our Accelerated Reader program.  The program is entitled “Bucks For Books.”  Students are expected to read books at their reading level and score an 80% or higher on the computer-based comprehension test that accompany each book.  On Fridays, students receive “bucks” (pretend money) for each passing score from that week.  We call this day “Pay Day!”  Bucks are earned based on the level of difficulty of each book.  Please see the following amounts that are posted in our classroom.

Chapter Book  (Level 2.6-4.0) =  $10.00
Chapter Book  (Level 2.0-2.5) =  $6.00
Picture Book  (Level 3.2-4.0)  = $3.00
Picture Book  (Level 2.1-3.1)  = $2.00
Picture Book  (Level 1.0-2.0)  = $1.00

Leveled Readers:
Blue = $3.00
Yellow = $2.00
Green = $1.00

Your child is responsible for managing his/her “bucks” in his/her “bank” envelope which is kept in his/her desk at school.  At the end of the fourth quarter, students will be given the opportunity to spend their hard-earned “bucks”
at our “Summertime Store.”

Donations for our Summertime Store would be greatly appreciated!  Bulk items (15-25) of items like bracelets, card games, sunglassess, books, activity books or any other items that students would enjoy during the summer.

Charlotte's Web Play

Our class has been reading the classic story of Charlotte's Web in class and will begin practicing for our end-of-the-year performances of this charming story of sacrifice and friendship.  Students will be divided into two groups and will begin practicing their parts for the play.  Parents will be invited to attend the final performace scheduled for Monday, May 29 or Tuesday, May 30 at 2:00 pm depending on which group her child is assigned.  Once we have formed our two groups, a letter will be sent home to inform you of which day your child will be performing.  Looking forward to a couple great acts!

Writing News
Your second grader has been busy writing narrative stories and persuasive letters during the past couple weeks as we have been learning  about the different reasons why authors write. I am so impressed by the improvement in their writing skills especially in the areas of organization, voice, and descriptive writing.  I am looking forward to sharing some of their writing samples with you at our end-of-the-year performances, so we can celebrate their hard work and success together!
We appreciate your continued support and active participation in your child’s education.  We are very proud of each student’s accomplishments and development this year.  Please continue to encourage your child and praise him/her for his/her efforts and hard work.

Congratulations to Emily, Cole, and Brian for being chosen as our class finalists for the Young Author's Competition this year.  Brian also won the school-wide competition for Grades K-2.
Emily wrote "My Camping Trip"
Cole wrote "World War II."
Brian wrote "Firestorm."
Way To Go!!

Homework- Your child’s weekly Reading/Language packet will be sent home every Friday to be completed and returned the following Friday.  The assignment sheet will outline each night’s homework.  In addition, daily Math homework assignments will be assigned and expected to be returned the following day.  We recommend spending 30-40 minutes completing assigned homework, studying weekly Spelling words, and reading each night.  Consistent homework routines will instill needed organizational and work skills!

Birthday Snacks- In honor of your child’s birthday you may send a class treat on the Friday of your child’s birthday week.  Please send in treats that are easy to pass out.  Any invitations for birthday parties can not be passed at school unless there is one for everyone in our class.
