FIRST GRADE
MRS. NOELKE AND MRS. DRISCOLL

AS WE NEAR THE END OF SCHOOL, PLEASE REMEMBER FIRST GRADERS NEED 10-12 HOURS OF SLEEP EVERY NIGHT, A HEALTHY BREAKFAST TO BEGIN THE DAY AND THE RESPONSIBILITY OF REMEMBERING THEIR OWN HOMEWORK, READING BOOKS, PROJECTS, MORNING SNACKS AND LUNCH. MRS. MCWHORTER SPOKE WITH THE STUDENTS TODAY AND USED THE ANAOLOGY OF A CAKE THAT IS "ALMOST DONE" - STILL GOOEY INSIDE AND DIFFICULT TO FROST OR SERVE- THE STUDENTS ARE "ALMOST DONE' AND READY FOR SECOND GRADE BUT THEY NEED A LITTLE MORE WORK. PLEASE HELP KEEP THEM FOCUSED AND MOTIVATED AS WE COMPLETE THESE LAST DAYS OF FIRST GRADE!

Mrs. Driscoll's sister has been diagnosed with advanced cancer. This was a sudden and unexpected occurrence. The family is waiting for more information regarding prognosis and treatment. Please keep Mrs. Driscoll's sister and her whole family in your prayers.

Please remember all those serving our country now in the military and pray for their safety as they work to protect our freedom.
Especially keep Kyle Guettler (Mrs. Guettler's son) in your prayers as he is serving in Afghanistan.

      FOR OUR MID-MORNING SNACK EACH DAY.

*** Please remember to check your child's S.T.A.R. Binder every night. Daily reading is encouraged, 20 minutes each night! You will find ten important sentences from our weekly story and fluency passages with our phonics sounds and high frequency words in sheet protectors under the Reading Log section of the STAR Binder.

Reading/LA: Introduce prefixes un- and re- and long i spelled/ i /and long o spelled/ o/, high frequency words, selection words, review theme, vowels au and aw, ea with the short e sound, drawing conclusions, main idea, summarizing, character, plot, setting, author's purpose, sequence, cause and effect, words with multiple meanings, and reading nonfiction resources- encyclopedias. Literacy Workstations:
*Word Work- Using model magic, students will create the letters to spell list words and rhyming words.
*High Frequency/Vocabulary Words: Review of all Unit 5 High Frequency Words, make flash cards.
*Writing- Write about Ben's famous quote, "early to bed, early to rise...". Write about one of Ben's ideas. Do we still use it today? Tell why you think it was a good idea.
*Library- Read other nonfiction texts about Ben Franklin. Complete Kite project.
*Reading Comprehension- Read Advanced Leveled Reader, "Jake's Dream" and complete Ben Franklin invention web.

Grammar Topic: More Pronouns- Identify and Use

Writing Topic: We will continue to review our 6 writing traits as we complete our writings this week and prepare for our Unit 5 Writing Test next week.

Social Studies and Science:We will conclude our forces/motion unit and our unit on goods and services this week. On Friday, we will begin our Ocean/Summer Safety Unit.
Religion:Mother Mary: We will continue learning about Mother Mary, reviewing her story, her "yes" to God, her role as mother to Jesus and to all of us, and preparing to honor her in a May Crowning in our classroom. We will crown Mary on Friday afternoon during our religion period. We will prepare the 5th decade of the Glorious Mysteries and practice some songs to sing for our Mother Mary.

HOMEWORK EACH WEEK :
**Math Homework: Mon. 130 Facts and No HW, Tues (none) Facts and HW, Wed.131B Facts and HW, Thurs.132B Facts and HW
MATH: Math Homework will be variable but almost nightly. The homework is the back side of a page that was already introduced and completed in class. It should take approximately 10 minutes to complete and is due the following day. It can be found in the homework folder inside your child's S.T.A.R. Binder. Please check this folder each evening.
Important: Math Homework should be completed in pencil and it is encouraged that parents check homework and sign completed work.

Spelling Packet : "Ben Franklin and His First Kite" spelling packet is due on Friday, May 18,, 2012.
SPELLING: A Spelling Packet will be sent home each Thursday in the Thursday Envelope. The Spelling Packet is due the following Friday. This Homework should be done neatly with pencil.
On the night before the Reading Test (usually Thursday), Reading Books come home so that students can re-read the selection and review High-Frequency words in the story and also comprehension. 
ENRICHMENT
Three Enrichment Projects are coming home in the STAR Binder on Monday, April 30, 2012. Please have your child pick at least one project to compete. They may pick 1, 2 or all 3 projects to complete but all students must choose at least 1 project. Projects will be due on Monday, 5-14-12.
